Green Popcorn

100_4156.jpg

After going to a Sheryl Crow concert last night, which was awesome by the way, I figured I would have to make something exciting... and Green!

Green Popcorn - A Lovingraw Original

Ingredients:

Cauliflower (1 whole chopped in popcorn size pieces)

Nutritional Yeast (a whole lot, just pour it in, maybe 4-8 heaping teaspoons)

Sea Salt (1 teaspoon or more)

Black Pepper (just shake it on)

Spirulina (make it green, 3 tablespoons, 5 if your hard core)

Olive Oil (2 teaspoons)

Water (just a splash)

How To:

Put it all in a gallon size zip lock bag and shake until your arms hurt.  You can make it cheesier by adding more yeast, greener by adding more spirulina, and sticky by adding raw honey (only do that if you are going to dehydrate).

You can eat it as-is, which I usually do, or you can dehydrate it overnight and it will shrink up into yummy little crunchy pieces.

Enjoy,

Philip

Thanks for the playful game! That was fun! I'm going to make this for my dad this weekend as a snack for Father's day. The doctors keep telling him what foods he can't have, but he doesn't know what yummy things he CAN have. I'll dehydrate it and trust this will give him that crunchy salty snack food he's missing! You RAWck!!!

Philip, I'll have to try this, your genius raw recipe invention, next time I'm in the mood to watch a movie. Thank you for sharing.

I admire the new look of you site. Well done.

Wow! this sounds great! I am going to have to try this. Like Rawbin.. Everyone tells you what you Can NOT eat but nobody tells you the yummy things to replace the things we crave. Thank you so much. Any special kind of yeast? Is this something that can be had often? I though yeast was not something that was Hygenic.

Hey Phillip,
I tried this last night and they were great. I was a popcorn lover and that was one of the foods I most missed, especially during a movie. It's from years of conditioning I guess.
I also made a batch omitting the yeast and spirulina and adding some dulse and cayenne. That was really good too.
Hope you remember me from CSL. Sounds like you're living the good life, doing what you love. I'm so happy for you!
hugs,
Jill

Hi Philip! Just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this! I made it last night, and it's the only way I can get Steve to eat Spirulina. He LOVES it, as do I. It will definitely be a staple for us. :)

I am a little new to raw food/dehydrating and am just wondering if this is dehydrated on the raw or veggie setting? I recently got an Excalibur and am very excited to try this (it sounds really good any way) :-) Thanks for sharing ~Sarah

Sarah, you can choose to eat it raw or you can dehydrate. Either one is great!

I substituted a veggie powder for spirulina and it turned out great. Thanks for sharing this :)

I made *Fiesta* Cauliflower this afternoon for lunch. Totally yummy. I had been wanting something mexican, so I added some garlic powder and cumin to it. It was the best cauliflower popcorn EVER. Thanks for the recipe, Philip! :)

Hi Philip! Sounds like you are all settled into your new home! Exciting stuff you are doing with oils- nice! Just wanted to let you know I finally made this raw popcorn recipe tonight and I LOVE IT! Arianna brought some to Gnosis in the winter and I didn't get around to making it until tonight (Arianna's was dehydrated and soooo yummy). I'm not dehydrating mine though. I NEVER thought I could EAT spirulina!! WOW! I used to mix spirulina with water and drink it really fast cuz it tasted nasty. But now I can EAT it! And it tastes amazing! I used about 4 Tablespoons of spirulina and 6 teaspoons of nutritional yeast, and the rest of the recipe as you said. I am so happy to have this yummy study treat in my fridge now :) Thank you! *hugs*

Okay, Call me crazy but I was just too curious about the nutritional content of this popcorn- well, the protein content mostly since there is so much (yay) spirulina (wow).
This is what I came up with for 1 large head of cauliflower (6-7 inches diameter), 4 Tablespoons of spirulina, and 6 teaspoons of nutritional yeast:

470 calories
49 grams of protein (yay, I am happy bout this cuz lifting heavier weights these days)
59 grams of carbs, of which 25 grams is FIBER (whoo hoo!)
and 10 grams of fat (healthy fat, olive oil style)

Once again, thank you Philip. Feel free to check those calculations for me!

All my best,
Rachel in NYC
