Slow Living

I’ve been in my dream home for almost a year, and so much more than my location has changed. Along with a whole community of new friends and playmates for Evie, I have a view of woods and meadows, spring water in all my taps, and a tranquillity that starts on the outside and permeates every cell of my being.

I knew when I moved from Cambridge in the UK to East Sussex that my output would change because Cambridge is known as the “ego capital of the world” and East Sussex has masses of divine feminine energy gently pulsing through it. After finishing my five books, I wasn’t concerned with writing as obsessively, and was happy to slow everything down.

I kind of boast that I only work ten hours a week, but any single mother will know that our unpaid work never really stops! I want to give you an inside peek of my life over the past few days so you can see what variety is possible when you make sure your paid work doesn’t dominate your life.

Thursday: My raw wilderness goddess friend Dani came to visit with her a gorgeous little toddler called Aaron. She is eight months pregnant and looking super strong and fit. I hadn’t seen Dani for two years yet the conversation flowed as if we were together only yesterday. Dani used to live with me when Evie was small, and look after us. I’m always grateful for her presence and love. She stayed over and we talked into the night as the kiddies slept. Well, until Evie woke up, then I went to bed! At 5 and a half, Evie has only slept through the night once. So far...

Friday: Dani, Aaron and I took Evie to her gorgeous farm school and then went to Bill’s in Lewes for a juice. I dropped them off at the train station, waved goodbye and went back home for a jacuzzi before going to pick up Evie. We’d been home playing for about thirty minutes when some of my friends came who were staying for the weekend. We were doing two days of kambo and ayahuasca ceremonies in my community building.

Evie and I went over with our friends to the community kitchen as they started to prepare the food. As guests arrived Evie was both entertained and entertaining. She has many friends in our community yet she preferred the company of adults that night. She wanted to watch me receive kambo but she fell asleep before it started. I was the first to receive the kambo, thinking I could then just help everyone else. It’s a kind of karma work for me, and something l love to inject time and energy into. The kambo experience wasn’t as strong as the last time, but afterwards I was shaking for about an hour, feeling it go deep into me. I was pretty much floored for the evening. Evie woke up a while later and I took her home (about 30 paces!) to bed.

Saturday: It was Evie’s friend’s birthday, and in true Evie style she had her cocktail dress on at 9am. Playing in the mud ruined the look so she came in to change into something more practical until the party started. I told her she’d have to be self sufficient for the day, which is easy with so many mummies and kiddies around, but I never usually take advantage of it. I do still have residual SMS (Single Mother Syndrome).

Evie went off to the party and I did an ayahuasca session. Just as we started, Adam’s mum came in to say hello, as she was in the area. I wished she could stay for the session but one of the party she was with didn’t want to. Another time. This ayahuasca was working deep too. Kambo and ayahuasca are a match made in heaven. I had to lay down and kept having visions of me trying to get inside or outside of some huge ball. And when I did, I realised I was still on a side. Duality at its best. It’s not about getting anywhere, we’re already home. The evening saw more kambo for existing and new people. I spent time with Evie before going to bed with her.

Sunday: Chatted to some of the kambo attendees. Surprised at how many people were into raw food. One guy called Juice told me The Klaxons were at our first session in October 2009. I can’t believe that I didn’t notice rockstars on my doorstep! Later I googled them, and indeed their last album has been fully influenced by the shamanistic path. Beautiful. Evie and the shaman guys hung out at my house after everyone else had gone. It was our community’s workday (this happens once a month) but I didn’t attend. I was still pretty floored by the process. I cleaned my house, made food, chatted and made special Sunday raw chocolate with tonnes of acai and hemp seeds. It didn’t last long. In the evening, Evie and I did some of her homework (reading books and playing with the words) and then had an early night.

Monday: I have a walking partner that I walk with on Mondays. After getting Evie off to school, we had a two hour dawdle and natter through the woods. It started to snow and I visualised it not settling. I’ve been trapped for 15 days since just before Christmas, and haven’t got over the inconvenience of that yet! I had a bank appointment and then went to the stupormarket to do some panic buying. Last time it snowed, they weren’t delivering for four days, and you can’t have no food for four days when there’s a five year old demanding papaya pudding! It made me more eager to get going with being self sufficient, but then I remembered I live my life slowly now, and I’ve not been here a year yet, and it won’t hurt for that to wait until I’m ready!

So here’s your question! What do you do that causes you to slow down and breathe in the whole of your life? Comments below ;-)
